THINGS PEOPLE ASK ABOUT WORKING WITH ME
Frequently Asked Questions
A plant-forward diet is a Mediterranean-style diet -- rich in a variety of plants, including fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. It also includes microbiome-friendly and anti-inflammatory foods. It can include a variety of animal foods but likely in smaller amounts than you're used to.
As long as you're willing to "assemble" meals, boil or steam a few things and chop a vegetable or two, we can find work-arounds for this. At the same time, it will take at least some effort on your part. Think of time spent preparing foods as as both a medical intervention and self-care. Ultimately, you are investing in yourself and your health.
First, I want to acknowledge the harm that has been caused by weight bias and discrimination perpetuated by society and sometimes, unfortunately, even health care providers. Everyone deserves to have their health concerns taken seriously without “losing weight” being proposed as a solution for every medical condition. Thin does not equal healthy and excess body weight may or may not result in weight-related health issues, depending on the person.
My goal is to help you be the healthiest you can be in a way that makes sense for you, your goals, specific preferences and life circumstances. Making health-related changes often results in at least some weight loss, however it’s difficult to predict how each individual body will respond. Weight is multifaceted and affected, not just by what or how much you eat and exercise, but by stress, sleep, medications, hormones, the gut microbiome, environmental chemicals, food additives, genes, trauma history, and more. Many of these can be addressed but some cannot.
What we do know is that eating a low calorie diet that leaves you hungry or one that severely limits the foods you can eat may work in the short term, but it rarely leads to long-term weight loss. It also has the tendency of harming your relationship with food.
When we work together, I’ll help you address several of the above contributors to excess weight that may also be affecting your overall health, all in a way that is sustainable for the long-term. A significant contributor that often gets overlooked, and one that I pay particular attention to, is the gut microbiome. A healthy gut microbiome may influence weight by affecting cravings, blood sugar control, inflammation and feelings of fullness and hunger.
My sincere hope is for you to find health and feel comfortable, confident, and at peace in your body, regardless of your weight.
Food is the primary way we should be getting our nutrients. Not only does food contain vitamins and minerals, but plant foods contain dozens of different fibres and over 10,000 different phytochemicals that cannot be replicated in supplements.
That being said, I often do recommend specific supplements. Research shows that most Canadians are not meeting minimum recommended intakes for a variety of vitamins and minerals. Even with a good diet, it may be difficult to get everything your body and brain needs to function optimally. There are a number of reasons for this, such as small appetites, health conditions, stress, medication side effects, genetic influences and food grown in mineral-depleted soils.
In addition, there is evidence for the use of other supplements for the management of depression, anxiety, bone health, metabolic conditions, inflammation and optimizing the gut microbiome.
When I recommend a supplement, I let you know how good the evidence is and I carefully choose the brand and form, taking into consideration test results for purity, heavy metals, etc. and ensuring that non-medicinal ingredients are as safe as possible.
Ultimately, you decide what's right for you.
All services are provided virtually, primarily by video call through the Practice Better healthcare platform.
In Canada, health care providers are registered by province. As a dietitian registered in Ontario I can only work with individuals who live in Ontario, Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
Private dietitian services are not covered by OHIP but may be covered by your private health insurance.
